The human cochlea is a hollow, spiral-shaped bone found in the inner ear that plays a significant part in the sense of hearing. For the first time, a team of scientists and surgeons has validated safe surgical access to the central core of the human cochlea. The study was published in the Scientific Reports.

A secure clinical pathway to the cochlea in the inner ear has been established and verified by an international team of researchers, opening the door for the use of several regenerative therapies to restore hearing. The biotechnology company Rinri Therapeutics, which is working on regenerative cell therapies for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), provided funding for the study.

Surgeons can now securely access the human cochlea using a standard surgical technique owing to a thorough model of the peripheral auditory nerve structure′s microanatomy.

Experts stated that these findings would immediately affect the understanding of the inner ear′s microstructure and the first-in-human clinical trials of the novel cell, gene, and medication therapies to treat hearing loss and deafness. With the help of this research, regenerative cell therapy for hearing loss can now be successfully implemented, and thus bring about a significant influence on economies and healthcare systems all around the world.

The findings will help safely deliver regenerative therapies to their target structures within the largely impenetrable human cochlea, thus lowering the risk of future clinical treatments and opening the door to clinical trials.
